James Archer, born in Edinburgh, was accepted as a student at the Royal Scottish Academy and first exhibited there in 1842. He painted portraits, genre subjects representing scenes of everyday life, landscapes and historical scenes. Archer's best-known works depicted children and people in costume as its subjects. The artist is known for his distinctive monogram of his initials transfixed by an arrow in which he used as signature and served as early branding.

In Which hand will you take?, the artist masterfully depicts a young lady dressed in charming outdoor attire and kneeling in a meadow before her favorite pet. As she playfully withholds her lunch behind her back and awaits the next move, the Border Collie patiently and attentively anticipates a treat.
