Folio. Original cloth with photo of Dinesen to upper board, dust jacket. Dust-soiling to extremities, light shelfwear, jacket with edgewear, light mildewing, tape repair to upper right corner of upper panel.
STATED FIRST EDITION, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED AND INSCRIBED by Beard on the paste-down and endpapers, featuring a rendering of "Hog Ranch" surrounded by five lions and a warthog with two piglets against a setting sun. Starting at the bottom margin and continuing up the side and top, Beard has inscribed: "D[ear] Jack; with warm Salaams from Hog Ranch; and in hopes that you might hurry over for the last chapters—but don't delay! A strange sun is setting on the feast / All Best wishes & thoughts, Sincerely, Peter (Beard) January 18-19, 1983."
WITH: The End of the Game. London: William Collins and Son, 1978.
Folio. Original stamped cloth, dust jacket. Lightly thumbed, 3 cm closed tear to upper edge of upper jacket panel, dampstain at head of spine, shelfwear.
INSCRIBED AND EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH COLLAGE. To the title page, Beard has inscribed "Deer (next to a sketch of a deer) "Jack; / From the depths of Kaniti Prison to the heart of the REAL jungle (NYC) inestimable Salaams and warmest appreciations for all! / Sincere thoughts droll memories and constant regards, as ever, Peter (Beard) / Feb. 10-11, '83." To the double page spread Beard has add two small black and white photographs, a thumbprint and a footprint, and a partial wrapper for a face and body cleanser, and a tag reading "12092 / Beard."
