ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM. 1527-1598.
Parergon sive Veteris Geographiae aliquot Tabulae. [Theatrum orbis terrarum....] [Antwerp: Plantin, c.1595.] Folio (440 x 274 mm). Woodcut title, 28 (of 30) double-page engraved map sheets, two double-page engraved folding views, lettered A-Z, and a-h, lacking T and Y, with c misbound next to C, ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Contemporary calf, rebacked, later endpapers.
ORTELIUS'S PARERGON WITH FINE CONTEMPORARY COLOR. While the maps in his Theatrum orbis terrarum were reduced by Ortelius, those contained in his appendix, the Parergon, were drawn by Ortelius himself. "The maps and plates in the Parergon have to be evaluated as the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century" (Koeman). Koeman/Krogt 31:051.
