3 parts in one volume, including the Parergon and Nomenclatura. Folio (442 x 280 mm). FIRST PART: title-page, illustrated arms of Phillip to verso (bound backwards), portrait, 116 double-page engraved mapsheets (of 117), numbered 1-118, with 34-35 on a single sheet, and lacking 114, decorated initials and head- and tail-pieces; SECOND PART: Parergon title-page, 29 (of 38) double-page engraved plates (including 26 map sheets, 2 double-page sheets of costumes and one double-page view) initials and head- and tail-pieces; THIRD PART: title-page device, first initial. ALL HAND-COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. 23 plates with tears in the margin, 10 affecting the plate, title-page with chipping to edges, tape repair, and was reinserted backwards. Contemporary calf, rebacked retaining original spine, corners renewed, later endpapers.

RARE SECOND SPANISH EDITION OF THE FIRST TRULY MODERN ATLAS, WITH FINE CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING, and the first published by Vrients, after purchasing the plates from the heirs of Ortelius. Dedicated to Phillip III of Spain, this edition contains the third state of the plate "Americae Sive Novi Orbis Nova Descriptio," with the appearance of Chesapeake Bay, "One of the most famous and easily recognizable maps of America" (Burden); as well as the third state of the world map "Typus orbis terrarum," with the corrected coastline of South America, but still showing America separated from the Arctic, reflecting the Northwest Passage.
