ILLUMINATED CARTA EXECUTORIA.

CARLOS II, KING OF SPAIN. 1665-1700. Carta executoria of King Carlos II of Spain. Valladolid: 1685.
Manuscript on vellum, in Spanish, 295 x 207 mm. 144 leaves, with early foliation 1-145 (omitting 144); collation: i-xiv10 xv4. 25 long lines in italic script for the text, italic capitals in gold on red, blue, or green grounds for headings, within a broad liquid gold border on each page, written area 225 x 148 mm. Two full-page miniatures, f. 1v: the Virgin standing on a crescent moon surrounded by seraphim and cherubim, flanked by two kneeling men on the right and two on the left; f. 2r: an achievement of arms. Smaller miniature on f. 141v depicting the king. Blue silk curtains between ff.1v-2r and ff. 141v-142r. Red and yellow silk cord visible on spine and in some gutters, seal now lacking. Numerous 6-line initials on square red, blue, or green grounds with leafy decoration in liquid gold or silver. Partially illegible ink stamp in bottom margin of each page. Binding of early red velvet over pasteboards, now lacking two pairs of green silk ties, velvet worn at edges.

Patent of nobility granted to the late Diego Merino de Bargas of Tornavacas (represented by two procurators) and Diego's sons, the brothers Rodrigo, Francisco, and Luis Merino de Bargas, residents of Lugar de Cavecuela. With notarial attestations on the last three folios.
