ILLUMINATED CARTA EXECUTORIA.

PHILIP III, KING OF SPAIN. 1598-1621. Carta executoria of King Philip III of Spain. Valladolid: 1612.
Manuscript on vellum, in Spanish, 305 x 210 mm. 100 leaves numbered 1-99 in contemporary arabic numerals (f. 100 blank not numbered); collation: i2 ii-v24 vi2. 30 long lines written in round Spanish script within a frame ruled in brown ink, written area, 215 x 120 mm. Seven-line cadel initials in the same brown ink as the text introduce subsections of the document. Two full-page miniatures: f. 1v depicting the Virgin and Child in heaven with the brothers Juan de Rivera de la Cerda and Alonso de Rivera de la Cerda kneeling below; f. 2r with an achievement of arms. Smaller miniature of the king on f. 97v. Red silk curtains between ff. 1v-2r and ff. 96v-97r. Remains of braided multi-colored silk cord visible ff. 12v-13r and ff. 96v-97r, now lacking seal. Occasional contemporary notes in the margins. Chalky offsets to a few pages not affecting legibility. Original Spanish binding of brown leather gilt over pasteboards, remains of four pairs of silk ties, minor worming, some fraying to corners and top edges, losses to top and bottom of spine, but still soundly bound.
Patent of nobility granted to the brothers Juan and Alonso de Rivera de la Cerda, described as resident in the city of Torija. With notarial attestations on the last two folios.
