The present work by George Ames Aldrich was once in the collection of Nancy (née MacNeil) Daly (1941-2009), one of Southern California's most prominent philanthropists and public activists on behalf of abused and neglected children. Daly moved to Los Angeles in 1978 and shortly after began attracting the influence and monetary support of the entertainment industry there to raise funds for the area's children in need. Her work culminated into the creation of what is now the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services in 1984 and she served on its advisory commission until 1999. Aside from her advocacy for children in need, she was an avid supporter of the arts, serving on both the board of the Los Angeles Opera and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, for which she was its Chair in 2005, and built an exceptional personal collection of Californian art.
