Provenance
Charles Tabachnick Collection, Toronto; his sale, Sotheby's, New York, November 19, 1986, lot 7.
Ray Stark Collection, Los Angeles (acquired at the above sale).
Bequeathed from the above to the present owner in 2004.

The present work was executed for inclusion in a limited number of handbound copies of the artist's book, Das eigene Leben, published by Julius Bard, Berlin, 1931, no. 1129.

Emil Nolde was considered one of the great watercolorists of the twentieth century. The artist turned to watercolor for its intrinsic fluidity; the medium was ideally suited to his interest in capturing a sense of nature's dynamism and in his hands became an effective expressive force. Nolde created a wonderfully atmospheric composition in the present work by combining vivid midnight blue with golden-yellow and paler hues of orange and violet. Like much of the artist's œuvre, it is underpinned by his innate understanding of color; while the forms are simplified almost to the point of abstraction, the heightened use of color as a means of expression incites an emotional response from viewers.

The first recorded owner of the present work was Charles Tabachnick of Toronto, a highly regarded collector of German Expressionist artists such as Kees Van Dongen, Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner and Alexej von Jawlensky. Blonde Frau und schwarzhaariger, in einen Kasak gekleideter Mann was acquired in 1986 by Ray Stark, who was one of the most successful and prolific independent film producers in postwar Hollywood and avid art collector. Other artists in his collection included Henry Moore, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Wassily Kandinsky, with many works now in the Getty Museum Collection.
