It was common for Jacob Epstein to cast three busts and up to six heads of any given sculpture. These casts could have been created any time after their date of origination, although a green patina is fairly common in his works from the 1930s. Epstein did not often sign or number his works, as is the case in the present sculpture; however according to the knowledge available, the original cast of this sitter was a bust, and the head version that is included in the catalogue raisonné was created in an edition of eight authorized by Lady Epstein.
