Sale: Christie's, New York, February 11, 2009, lot 70.
Acquired at the above sale by the present owner.
Born in 1921 and educated at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, Yvonne Canu was influenced by the work of the pointillists, particularly the artist Georges Seurat and his masterpiece Un dimanche après-midi à l'île de la Grande Jatte. She belonged to a trend of French twentieth century artists who looked to the color theories of Divisionism. These painters focused more on the technical variants associated with the methods of Pointillism and its specific style of distinct dots of color applied in patterns to create a larger image. Canu, known mostly for her coastal and harbor scenes such as the present work, gained acknowledgment for her work after the Second World War.
