Rare, each proof is unique. According to Schellmann, Warhol worked on the prints at approximately the same time as his Marilyn Reversal paintings.
In the late 1970s, Warhol decided to rework his Marilyn images from the 1960s, reversing the tonal values so that the photographic negative predominates. In these mature portraits of Marilyn, her face is dark and the shadows around her face are now illuminated, resulting in a lurid, ghostly quality, as if to highlight the tragedy of the actress's brief life, and Warhol's continued fascination with her as an icon of glamour and death.
