A M-209 CONVERTOR CIPHER MACHINE, AMERICAN, MID-20TH CENTURY,

serial number 7322, supplied by the L C Smith & Corona Typewriter Inc, N.Y., the six rotor machine, finished in olive green casing and outer case, in original canvas bag with oiler, ink tube, tweezers and screwdriver,
the machine 7in (18cm) wide
7in x 3 1/2in x 5 1/2in (18cm x 9cm x 14cm) overall in bag

Footnotes

During the Second World War, the M-209 was referred to by German forces as the 'American Machine' Number 1, or AM-1. The machine does not require electricity to use and was a conveniently portable device. However, by 1943 it is thought that its coded messages could be broken within four hours.
