We are grateful to Alexander Robertson for confirming the attribution to John Atkinson Grimshaw on the basis of photographs.
The following three works by Atkinson Grimshaw are fine examples which span the breadth of the artist's career, from his early landscapes of the 1860s inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, to his most celebrated motifs, the moonlit streets of Leeds, and the poetic atmosphere of the Northern docks. As Alexander Robertson notes, in Grimshaw's work, 'the sense of mystery and atmosphere seen in near empty streets or by foggy docksides, proclaimed their poetic, romantic qualities to contemporaries, as they do to us'1
