Provenance
The Artist, by whom gifted to

Private Collection, U.K.

Tom Cross (1931-2009) was an artist, educator and author. His paintings are held in museums such as the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and The Salford Museum & Art Gallery. Cross held several professional posts in the arts, including Assistant Director of the Welsh Arts Council (1959-63) and Principal of Falmouth School of Art (1976–87). In his later years, Cross authored books on Cornish artists including Painting the Warmth of the Sun, St Ives Artists (1995) and The Shining Sands, Artists in Newlyn and St Ives (1999).

Cross, who was born and raised in Manchester, founded The Northern Young Artists Society, of which Lowry was to become president. Through the Society's annual exhibitions from 1953 onward, the two artists developed a firm friendship. On the occasion of Cross's wedding (in 1958), Lowry gifted the young couple four works - two oils and two drawings, the other drawing being Going to Work (sold in these rooms, 14 November 2012 for £97,250).

The present work is one of two known pencil drawings by Lowry of the Garrick Theatre, which was established in 1901 on Wellington Road South, in Stockport, Cheshire and still runs today.
