Footnotes

The present work depicts the British Mediterranean fleet riding out a hurricane in Marmoris Bay, Turkey, in early December 1840.

This dramatic scene depicts the British fleet riding out the protracted hurricane which struck the western Mediterranean late in 1840. Following its successful operations off the coast of Syria in October and early November, the fleet had to run for shelter in Marmoris Bay, on the southern Turkish coast, opposite the island of Rhodes, when a furious gale began to blow on 28th November. Commanded by Admiral Sir Robert Stopford, flying his flag in the 110-gun 1st rate Princess Charlotte [shown here in the centre], the fleet had no option but to seek a safer anchorage and it was forced to remain in Marmoris Bay until at least 9th December such was the severity of the weather.
