Footnotes

Provenance
Private Collection, USA

A label attached to the stretcher traditionally identifies the sitter as 'Thomas Cockburn, Lord Rutherford'. Since no such person is recorded the sitter may possibly be Thomas Cockburn (b.1723), son of Margaret Rutherford who lived at Bowchester, Berwickshire in Scotland who would have been of appropriate age for this portrait. He married Agnes Scott and was Deputy Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland.

Bartolomeo Nazari worked mainly in Venice and is known to have painted a number of full-length portraits of young 'milordi' on the Grand Tour. One such portrait, of Samuel Egerton (1711-1780), with the sitter in a very similar pose is in the collection of the National Trust at Tatton Park, Cheshire, UK (NT 1298199).
