The present work may depict Croesus before King Cyrus II. As told by Herodotus, having defeated Croesus in battle, King Cyrus condemned him to be burned alive. However, Croesus prayed to the god Apollo, who responded by gathering storm clouds above the pyre to extinguish the flames and thus save Croesus.
