The Duke is seen here wearing the Order of the Blood of Jesus Christ, the chivalric order that he himself established in 1608 with the approval of Pope Paul V. It is recorded that the name of the order was taken from the drops of blood of Christ said to be preserved in the Cathedral in Mantua.
The present work is based on the full-length portrait of the Duke in a private collection, Mantua, which was exhibited at the Mostra Iconografica Gonzaghesa, Mantua, 1937, as no. 161.
