Footnotes

Provenance:
Property from a private collection, England
Formerly property from the collection of the renowned Iraqi architect Said Ali Madhloom (1921-2017)
Acquired directly from the artist by the above

"I was very much influenced by Jewad's work though we worked in different ways and were usually interested in different subjects. Generally Jewad worked at night while I made use of free moments during the day. He would work out his ideas for paintings in his head and make small sketches on scraps of paper; when he started to paint, he knew exactly what we was going to do... this amazed me as I had to work on my paintings and alter things as I went along

Our aim was to create an artistic language unique to Iraq, built on the great art of its past civilisations - Sumer, Babil, Assyria, and of course Islam, but in a language of the twentieth century"

Lorna Selim, 1999
