Robert Vonnoh completed the present work in 1884 when he was teaching at the Cowley Art School in Boston, Massachusetts. Vonnoh had just returned to Boston after spending two years in Paris, France studying at the Académie Julian under Gustave Clarence Rodolphe Boulanger (1824-1888) and Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911). Two years later in 1886, Vonnoh would paint a companion portrait of the sitter's wife, Winifred T. Kendall.
