A unique art object and a rare piece of history, Gysis's eye-catching palette features a fine example of his family genre subjects, as well as a host of original paintings by other nineteenth century masters. These German or Austrian artists, known for their genre, landscape and history paintings, were prominent exponents of the Munich School, some of them being Gysis's fellow professors at the Academy of Fine Arts.1
The Greek artist's wonderful vignette in the lower centre captures the likenesses of his daughters Penelope and Margarita in a playful and rather mischievous moment—painting a clown's face on their father's palette!—demonstrating Gysis' consummate ability to fully exploit the anecdotal with humorous finesse and great economy of means.
1 Gysis's palette features signed oil works on wood by Ludwig von Löfftz (1845-1910), Albrecht Christoph Wilhelm von Diez (1839-1907), Hermann Gottlieb Kricheldorf (1867-1949), Mathias Schmid (1835–1923) Albert F. Schroder (1854-1939), Eduard Theodor Ritter von Grützner (1846-1925), Franz von Defregger (1835-1921), Hermann von Kaulbach (1846-1909), Karl Raupp (1837-1918), Julius Adam II (1852-1913), Gabriel Cornelius Ritter von Max (1840-1915), Julius Scheuerer (1859-1913), Wilhelm Karl Räuber (1849-1926), Rudolf Otto von Ottenfeld (1856-1913), Anton Seitz (1829-1900), Otto Seitz (1846-1912), Wilhelm Löwith (1861-1932), Ludwig Hartmann (1835-1902), Ernst Meisel (1838-1895), and Nikolaos Gysis (1842-1901).
