Folio (327 x 232 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 55 engraved architectural plates, woodcut head- and tailpieces, 2 engraved tailpieces. Contemporary quarter vellum and boards. Spine heavily chipped, browning, a few ink stains.

FIRST EDITION in this form, compiled by Giambattista Spampani and Carlo Antonini, including Vignola's influential 1562 essay on the five orders of architecture, and an explanation of his work on perspective. Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola was one of the great architects of Italian Mannerism in the 16th century. His major works included the Palazzo Bocchi in Bologna, revisions to the Palazzo Farnese in Piacenza, and St. Peter's basilica at the Vatican, where he carried on the work of his mentor, Michelangelo.
