FIRST EDITION of the "first photographically illustrated medical book published in the United States" (Goldschmidt & Naef, Truthful Lens 97). It is also, according to Stanley Burns, in his Early medical photography in America, the first book in the psychiatric field and perhaps the entire medical field published with actual photographs." The number of plates varies from copy to copy: some are known with one photograph, with two photographs (as in the Truthful Lens citation) and with five photographs. Copies at the Clements Library, Ann Arbor, and Harvard each contain four.
