A rare survival of an Account Book of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the town of Laja, just 35 miles west of the capital La Paz. The accounts include purchases and constructions in the town, rents and historical data. The church was built by adventurous conquistadors starting in 1545, using stone from the nearby ceremonial Inca city of Tiwanuku. Just 3 years later, in 1548, the conquistador Alonso de Mendoza was scouting for a site for a city on the antiplano and stopped at Llaxa, a village of Aymara Indians, and decided to found the city of La Paz on that spot, but after two cold night at its altitude of 12,000 feet, he moved on down into the valley of Chuquiago and re-founded the city of La Paz.
