A LARGE FORMAT LITHOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF CHARLES DICKENS INSCRIBED TO HIS PUBLISHER.

WATKINS, JOHN AND CHARLES, after. Portrait of Charles Dickens. Engraved portrait after the Watkins photograph, 345 x 285 mm (image), INSCRIBED to Dickens's publisher Frederic Chapman of Chapman & Hall, June 10, 1862, very mild spotting and toning, framed.

In full: "To Fredk Chapman / Monday thirteenth June, 1862 / Faithfully Yours / Charles Dickens." Chapman and Hall published Dickens's early novels, but the author quarreled with the firm in 1844 and took his newer works to Bradbury & Evans. In 1859, however, he returned to Chapman & Hall and that firm published his remaining titles. This large format lithographic portrait of Dickens is rare, particularly as it is signed to Frederic Chapman, the junior partner in the firm.
