DICKENS, CHARLES. 1812-1870.

The Old Curiosity Shop. London: Chapman and Hall, 1841.
8vo (250 x 166 mm). Dedication page to Samuel Rogers, Esquire (not called for in Smith). Late 19th/early 20th century red morocco gilt, morocco-edged cloth slipcase, edges gilt. Free front endpaper slightly loose with traces of old glue repair, minor wear and spotting.

FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, A CHRISTMAS DAY PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED ON THE TITLE PAGE, "Daniel Maclise, From his friend, Charles Dickens — Christmas Day 1841." A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY. Daniel Maclise (1806-1870) was a great friend of Dickens and illustrated some of Dickens's early works, such as The Chimes, Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, including one illustration for The Old Curiosity Shop. His portrait of Dickens seated at his desk hangs in the National Gallery in London, and his group portrait of the Dickens family, known as the "Nickleby" portrait, was used as the basis for the frontispiece illustration in Nicholas Nickleby. Smith I, 6a.
