Footnotes

James Braid (1870-1950) and John Henry Taylor (1871-1963) were two of the pioneers of modern golf. Along with Harry Vardon, they were members of the fabled Great Triumvirate of the sport at the turn of the century, winning the Open Championship five times each and later becoming distinguished gold course architects.
