For her floral still lifes, Laura Coombs Hills often used bouquets that she handpicked and designed from her garden at her summer home in Newburyport, Massachusetts and would then set her arrangements against a backdrop of scarves and fabrics that she collected on her travels. In the present work completed in 1947, Hills achieves an elegant design by contrasting the vivid palette of bright yellow, orange, pink, and purple flowers against the more subtle tones of the vase and decorative drapery in the background. Shortly after its completion, she exhibited Mixed Flowers No. 2 at The Guild of Boston Artists.
