March Avery's inspiration for the present work painted in 1963 most likely came from her summer spent that year with her parents in Lake Hill, New York, several miles north of Woodstock, and the surrounding Catskills region. March depicts her mother Sally wearing a loosely fitted light blue and white striped shirt and a wide brimmed sun hat. The inground swimming pool of one of the homes they rented that summer is visible in the background. Sally looks down intently sketching the landscape around her.
