Literature
Alfred Robaut, L'Oeuvre de Corot, Paris, 1965, Vol. III, pp. 124-125, No. 1592, illustrated.
Corot traveled frequently to Arras from 1851 on, often in the company of friends and fellow artists, such as his close friend Constant Dutilleux, who had family in Arras (Dutilleux would die of a stroke in 1865). Initially preferring solitude, Corot had taken up the habit of working in a group since his time in Italy.
Records show that Corot had stayed in Arras in October 1859 but did not return for several years, indicating that he may have completed the present work from the many plein-air sketches he penned before.
