Footnotes

The London Illustrated News reported that the Duke of Lancaster ran aground on a rock near the island of Jebel Sukhur. The P&O steamer Australia, passing on her way to Calcutta, rescued all the passengers and crew of the shipwreck except the chief officer and five men who stayed to take charge of the wreck. According to the article "Most passengers came on board in a very pitiable condition, some of them in their night-dresses, having lost the whole of their effects, and having been out on the rocks all night. But no lives were lost by this disaster" Illustrated London News, 14 August 1880.
