Edward Thomas Coke (1807-1888) was educated at Shrewsbury and joined the 45th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1825. The Regiment, having been based in Sri Lanka, was then in Rangoon, engaged in the First Anglo-Burmese War. Coke was promoted to Lieutenant in 1827 and was later awarded the Army of India Medal with clasp Ava.
In 1831 he returned to England and left shortly afterwards to travel to North America where he worked on his book 'A Subaltern's Furlough, which detailed and illustrated his travels there.
He was later promoted to the Lieutenant-Colonelcy of the 1st Derbyshire Militia in 1853 and served with the Regiment during the Crimean war.
