Footnotes

The dedication inscribed on this canvas almost certainly relates to the French botanist and landscape designer Auguste François Marie Glaziou (1828-1906). At the request of Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II, Glaziou traveled to Rio de Janeiro in 1858 to take up the position of Director of Parks and Gardens in the city. Whilst in Brazil, he started a program of documenting and collecting plants, a feat for which many species of plants have been named after him. Glaziou returned to France in 1897 to complete his own botanical research.
