Provenance
The collection of the late Mrs Maureen Hanton.

British born; Day was based in the West Indies from 1846-1851, travelling through Barbados, St. Vincent, Bequia, Grenada, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Les Saintes, Dominica, Nevis, Barbuda and Antigua. During his travels he took care to document the places and people that he saw, and upon his return to England he wrote his book 'Five Years Residence in the West Indies', which was published in 1852 in two volumes by Colburn & Co., London. Some of the drawings from the collection on offer here were engraved to illustrate this book.
