The present lot is decorated in the same manner as the famous Orchid Vase which was Tiffany's most important showpiece at the 1889 Paris Exposition. It was designed by Edward C. Moore with the enamelling by John T. Curran and belonged to the group of "Saracenic wares" that contributed towards Tiffany & Co winning the Grand Prize for Silverware, and Moore becoming a chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur that year.
After careful re-examination, the patches of dark material between the raised scrolling decoration have been found to be tarnish rather than niello.
