Footnotes
Reed was granted two patents on August 1, 1865. No. 49154 covered the regulator used in this watch. No. 49155 covered the escapement. The "AHFE" on the dial is an alphanumeric for "1865."
The watch and its escapement, which is based on a design by the 18th century French watchmaker Robert Robin is discussed in Nijssen, G. A. (2005). George P. Reed & Hiram W. Smith: Two of Greater Boston's Individual Watchmakers. NAWCC Bulletin, 3-24.
