Footnotes
The Order of Railway Conductors of America (ORC), founded in 1868, was a labor union that represented train conductors in the United States. It remained active until 1969 when it merged with other unions to form the United Transportation Union. Because they had overall responsibility for the train, conductors were the most highly compensated railway workers of their era.
