Footnotes

Roberto Duran was born on June 16th, 1951, in the small beachside neighborhood of Chorrillo, Panama. A great swimmer, master of his own beach, and a keen collector of coconuts, "Mano de Piedra" as he would later be called, was a sports lover at a young age and immediately recognized as a born fighter.
This aptitude was noticed and nurtured and at the tender of 16 years, Roberto made his debut in professional boxing.

Roberto's KO avenged an early defeat against countryman Esteban De Jesus, and later won his WBC Lightweight title by overwhelming Scotland's Ken Buchannan at Madison Square Garden in New York, with a thirteenth round KO - simply ignoring a left jab whose regularity had been compared to the Greenwhich Time Signal.

By June 20th, 1980, after defeating former world welterweight champion Carlos Palomino, Roberto faced Sugar Ray Leonard for the WBC welterweight world title, in Montreal. He won convincingly by Unanimous Decision. He would later lose to Sugar Ray in his fabled return.

After conquering the super welterweight title, in February 24th, 1989, Roberto was crowned WBC middleweight world champion against American Iran Barkley in Atlantic City. Throughout his incredible career, Roberto faced great rivals such as Hector "Macho" Camacho, Sugar Ray Leornard, Thomas Hearns, Wilfred Benitez and Pipino Cuevas, among many others.

Roberto "Stone Hands" Duran conquered four world titles in five divisions, is a legendary champion, and a hero in his native country, Panama!
