JAZZ—ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS.
BUEL, HURBERT. Group of 20 original illustrations on paper, pen and ink, pastel, and some gouache, 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches to 13 3/4 x 8 inches, [1950s], most signed ("HB" or "Hubert Buel"), being caricatures of various jazz and other music figures, mounted to album pages, some toning but generally excellent.
A wonderful collection of illustrations by San Francisco artist Hubert Buel, many of which appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle. Subjects include: Nat "King" Cole, Harry James, "Dizzy" Gillespie, Igor Stravinsky, Art Tatum, Eartha Kitt, Dave Brubeck, Stan Kenton, Gene Krupa, Frankie Lane, Errol Garner, Jack Teagarden, George Shearing, Bill Davis, Benny Goodman, Henry "Red" Allen, Jean "Toots" Thielmans, Cal Tjader, Oscar Peterson and Johnny Hodges. The album appears to have been assembled by Buel with his business card, clippings and reproduced examples of his work.
