24 parts in 23 (2 volumes). 8vo. 48 engraved plates including the additional titles, vignettes and pictorial initials within text, after Richard Doyle. Original yellow pictorial wrappers. Custom chemise and cloth pull-off case. Rebacking and some tiny edge-repairs, some dust-soiling and fading, plates a little darkened or foxed, an ad leaf torn with loss at rear of part 3, part 18 upper cover heavily marked.
Provenance: Samuel Stark (ownership inscription to some parts); John Ruyle (bookplate to chemise).

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS. Ads conform to Van Duzer with the following omissions: part 2 "Respirator" ad, part 3 Edinburgh Guardian Illustrated Supplement ad and "Just Publisher per Post" ad, part 5 Madgwick ad, part 6: "Familiar in their Mouths" ad, part 9: "Opening of the Crystal Palace" leaf (but slip present), part 10 Cassell's slip, part 17 "British College of Health" slip; also part 12 bears a differing back wrapper.
The Newcomes was written in the interval between Thackeray's two visits to America; the last page was written in Paris on June 20, 1855. Van Duzer 147.
