Folio (425 x 253 mm). viii, [2], xxii, [4], viii, cxlix, [1], 351, [1], [36], [1]; [6], 589, 37, [5]; [6], 760, [2], [52] pp. Frontispiece portrait of the author, 57 engraved maps, all but 3 of which are folding, 96 engraved plates, several of which are folding, folding table and illustrations in the text. Period full tree calf, rebacked preserving original spines. Some dampstain, mainly to margin of preliminary and final leaves in third volume but some minor dampstain to other two volumes, faint foxing, some leaves toned, repairs to a few leaves.
