A wood netsuke of a rat

By Masamitsu, Edo period, 19th century
Curled forward to form a compact ball, one hind paw scratches its nose while the other rests behind its ear, its long tail winding around its body is held in place by a forepaw, the fur finely incised and stained dark, eyes inlaid in horn, signed in an oval reserve at the base of the tail Masamitsu 1 1/2in (3.8cm) tall
