131 albumen print cartes-de-visite plus 14 silver collodian print cabinet cards, of members of the extended Hay family, housed in 1863 Altemus & Co photo album, spine perished, all images identified in pen on mat beneath
Likely kept by a cousin of Lincoln's secretary, John Hay, the album contains photos of a man identified as "Grandfather John Hay," plus images of John Hay's uncle Milton Hay (the attorney who secured the young man's position with Lincoln), John Hay himself, Elizabeth Hay, Elma Hay, Maria Hay, Denize Hay, Nat Hay, Joseph Hay, Charles E. Hay (John Hay's brother), and other Hay family members, as well as members of the Amos and Shepherd families. Present also are carte-de-visite photographs of the Brady Gallery image of Hay, Nicolay and Lincoln; Chief Ross of the Cherokee Nation; Stephen Douglas; Mrs. Stephen Douglas; and General N.M. Curtis.
