Footnotes
The United States went into a period of national mourning when George Washington died in 1799 and while death had been a favorite theme among artists and craftsmen, it suddenly became both patriotic and fashionable. Few homes in America were without a print, needlework picture or other representation of his death. The example shown here includes all of the motifs frequently found.
